Essential Oils & Environmental Toxins w. Lindsey Graham - Embodied Wellness Co. | Episode 06

podcast Feb 10, 2021

Welcome to Embodied Wellness Radio, a podcast framed around MAKING WOMEN HEALTHY AGAIN.   We specialize in educating women on optimizing their health through fitness, nutrition, mindset & SO MUCH MORE!

Many toxins exist in our environment, from car exhaust, industrial pollution, chemical fertilizers, the list goes on.  Much of that is only in our control if our nation stands up against these planet deteriorating practices.  However, we can start small, such as in our very own home!  You'd be surprised how many chemicals and carcinogens exist in common every day home products that contribute to the overall deterioration of human health as we know it.  But that shouldn't be sad or scary, it's empowering!  It's empowering to know that we can begin to make small changes in our homes to ensure the health our us and our loved ones who we rely on to make change in future generations.

On todays podcast we speak with Lindsey Graham.

Lindsey is a momma, wife , former dental hygienist  and essential oil educator.
Lindsey helps people reduce their toxic load , elevate their health, learn how to swap out everyday products to more natural plant based options, and empower themselves again when it comes to their health. She loves teaching people about the magic of essential oils and how they are such a supportive tool to help our bodies return to a state of homeostasis.

SPEAK TO WITH LINDSEY (She'll hook you up with some awesome oils!)

DENON'S HEADACHE REMEDY:

  • Doterra PastTense Roller on the back of the neck and temple
  • 1 drop of Frankincense under the tongue
  • 1 drop of Peppermint oil pressed into the top of the mouth

HEALTHY SWAPS AROUND THE HOUSE

1. Around the house deodorizers

With all those plugin scents around the house, candles, perfumes and colognes...or perhaps you have teenage kids that refuse to shower in anything but Axe or Old Spice shower gel, you are being inundated with chemicals scents.  And yes, although it does help to cover up cooking, bathroom and general stale scents, chemical scents are well known carcinogens and should be minimized in a home at all times (A carcinogen is any substance, radionuclide, or radiation that promotes carcinogenesis, the formation of cancer).

  • In the air: Instead of having one of those Glade or Febreeze plugins in your wall, or any spray scents, swap them out for an essential oil diffuser.  If you prefer a summer fresh scent, try something such as grapefruit or orange oils.  Personally, when I'm prefer diffusing oils I want a stronger scent such as peppermint, eucalyptus or rosemary.   Sarah and I also enjoy the DoTerra Holiday scent (yes anytime of the year) and the BreatheEasy. Lindsey is our supplier, so speak to her if you want some.
  • Drawer & dryer sheets: A few common household deodorizing hacks including using dryer sheets in draws and obviously while your clothes are in a dry cycle after washing.  However dryer sheets are not as dainty and "fresh" as one might think;

In an article by Dr. Axe, he writes:

"In one of the most interesting studies to date, pioneering fragrance researchers Anne Steinemann, PhD, a professor of civil and environmental engineering, looked at the chemicals spewing out of dryer vents. Using new, pre-rinsed organic towels, Steinemann and her team sampled laundry emissions after using scented fabric softening and dryer sheets in clean washers and dryers.

What was coming out of those vents? (And into people’s lungs?) Seven hazardous air pollutants and 25 volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Some of these, including acetaldehyde and benzene, are not safe at any level. (These are also pollutants that commonly spew out of vehicle tailpipes.)"

Instead, Sarah and I use organic cotton balls, give them a few drops of essential oils (for dryer balls we use whatever we think smells best that day!)

2. Insect & mice repellent

No more going to Home Depot to find the best/most toxic way of keeping pesky mice, spiders, mosquitos and ants out of the house.  Did you know that peppermint oil works great too?  Check out this video:

3. Bath and shower

 I already dread malls, however when I see a Bath & Body Works or Lush down the hallway, I will double back and grab map to avoid walking past it, it's almost an immediate chemical headache.   Instead, you can use essential oils in your baths.  Showers too if you want them in the beginning to open up your nasal cavities, but best for baths.  However, it's not as simple as just pouring oils into a bath, it requires a little process;

  1. To make sure the oil's don't just sit onto of the water they first it must be combined with a carrier oil, such as coconut or Jojoba oil.
  2. For a bath, use 3-12 ratio of drops of essential oil in a tablespoon of carrier oil to create an aromatic, therapeutic bath (we list some combinations below depending on the mood).
  3. Pour the bath water (don't add the oils while it's pouring, add them and stir them in once it's poured.
  4. Enjoy your bath!  After the bath it will still have touch of oil, so be careful exiting.  To wash

A couple awesome bath blend options:

  • Energizing and & revitalizing bath: 5 drops Lemon, 3 drops Rosemary, 2 drops Thyme
  • Muscle relaxation bath: 5 drops Marjoram, 4 drops Lemongrass, 3 drops Lavender (We also recommend adding a hefty scoop of Epsom salts!)
  • Relaxation bath: 5 drops Lavender, 4 drops Chamomile, 3 drops Frankincense

4. Cleaning products

There are more and more natural cleaning products entering the market, and we couldn't be happier!  But our wallets certainly can be.  All these natural cleaners are great and all, but if you're like us and already pay top dollar for the best of the best food, supplements, and everything else that biohackers do, it ads up fast!

One hack that we began doing last year was making our own cleaning solutions.  I'd reckon we save $20-$25 per month on cleaning supplies, which is a couple coffee dates each month.  I'll take that!

We bought the OnGaurd cleaner concentrate from Lindsey at DoTerra, which was like $25, a small glass spray bottle on amazon ($10) , and a little jug of white vinegar (maybe $5?).  We add a 1 tbsp of the cleaner concentrate, 1 tbsp of vinegar, and the rest of the spray bottle is water.  Shake it up, and BOOM.  An all-natural spray to use around your home.   We go through about 2.5 bottles per year, and use it as an all purpose cleaner for the whole house, excluding the floors.  And I clean...ALOT.

I searched the DoTerra blog for "cleaning" and some AWESOME DIY projects for glass cleaners, air fresheners, wood polish, yoga mat spray, hand soap, brush cleaner, and so much more.
